Reclaiming peace!
Have you ever had days - or periods of time - where you had so much extraneous stuff going on that your brain felt like a jar of marbles that had spilled, and marbles were bouncing everywhere?
We are sure you know the feeling. We all have experienced this. Some of us more than others.
In last week's edition, I spoke about what to do when feeling stuck.
Being stuck can certainly be accompanied by a fair amount of stress.
This week, I offer strategies to combat the stress.
Things such as disappointments with business/work, the kids are sick, struggles with the spouse or significant other, and a host of other topics can certainly create massive distractions.
Chaos in the head can make it a challenge to focus on the necessary task at hand.
When left unchecked, this can put us in a funk for days making it difficult to regain our focus for being productive.
When/if you find yourself in this predicament, here are five techniques that we suggest for bringing order to the bouncing marble balls.
They do not have to be carried out in this order, but we do suggest that you engage in all five for full effectiveness.
Keep in mind that participating in all five does not have to be done all at once.
Perhaps one of the most important things to do is to identify what is the one most important thing that my business needs right now (or, what is the one thing that I most need to get done right now?)?
Oftentimes we try to pile too much onto our plates in our everyday lives.
When we are in those moments of our brain being a trainwreck due to stressors, that big plate can compound the carnage. In turn, more paralysis ensues.
So, when in distress, pick one thing to act on. The success from tackling one thing will help to build back your momentum for getting other boxes checked.
Another strategy is to reflect on what has been working for you, or the things that you do well.
Reflection can help to calm the chaos happening because it centers you. It also brings your successes back to the forefront of your thinking.
If your struggle at the moment is dealing with your own inner demons and negative self talk, then look for instances that provide positive affirmation.
Our inclination is to look for those things that give validation to the negative stories we tell ourselves.
This is where testimonies that you collect can come in quite handy - for YOU.
Save notes, text messages, etc of encouraging words that others share about you. Reflecting back on them is a great way to remind yourself that you are making a difference.
Yes, you may not make a difference for everyone. But you are making a difference for many. And that’s pretty darn special.
You can turn the wreckage around through praise.
Praise can be done through listening to uplifting music, or by reading books that contain a positive message.
Choose whatever is encouraging for you. It may be songs that get you pumped up, songs that soothe you, or media that has spiritual content.
Whatever it may be, give praise.
Journaling is a phenomenal tool for bringing calm to a maelstrom.
Not everyone is a writer. But there are times when sitting down with pen and paper in a peaceful place can do wonders.
Not sure what to write? That’s ok.
Even if you start by writing over and over something such as “I’m struggling. I’m struggling. I’m struggling.” much like when those of us old enough to have had to write on the chalkboard in school (or worse, at home on paper) 100 times “I will not talk in class.”
Set a timer for five or 10 minutes and commit to moving the pen nonstop the entire time.
You may be surprised by how your gray matter and pen form a partnership that leads to you writing down productive action steps.
Finally, whenever you find yourself in distress or in unrest, we encourage you to Pray. Regardless of your beliefs, pray.
Speak to the universe, to nature, or to whomever is dominant in your Faith. This does wonders for clearing the mind.
Putting your thoughts out there will very often lead to you answering your own questions, or solving your own dilemmas.
Again, we offer these five steps - identifying one thing upon which to act, reflection, praise, journaling, praying - as effective strategies for calming a brain that is in chaos because of life’s stressors because they have been successful for us.
As with anything, consistency is key.
So often when we find ourselves struggling, we can usually identify something which we have neglected to dip ourselves in (one of the five strategies) that has led to an internal imbalance in our lives.
We hope you find these strategies as useful as we do.
