Know your TRUTH!
While being interviewed this week on another podcast show, I was asked what was the number one thing that I - and the UNCAGED CLINICIAN team - find where people need the most help.
Everyone wants to know marketing, attraction, and sales.
But a subject that comes up repeatedly that, for so many, slows down these three things is Imposter Syndrome.
In fact, I've had several discussions on this with students just in the last few days.
Imposter Syndrome is real, which means everyone is prone to its attack.
Even the most highly successful people have had to detox at some point from its venom.
Let's first identify where Imposter Syndrome lurks.
The ultimate incubator is a mistrust in, and an unawareness of our own true identities.
Rather, we take on false identities based on past experiences, our exposure to events, words spoken to us, and - the real kicker - our perception of other's perceptions.
I'm reminded of a common saying in sports that says, "We are only as good as our worst performance."
The baseline we focus on is our worst performance.
The problem is that we tend to take on someone else's opinion of our performance as truth.
True that another's opinion may be an accurate assessment in that situation deeming it a fact - in that moment.
But facts change. Truth does not.
Denver, CO can get a foot of snow in the morning and then be 50 degrees in the afternoon, melting it all away.
Both are facts. The truth is that the weather changes.
A real life example to highlight that truth always prevails over facts is this:
It is a fact that I (yes, me) had horrible grades in undergraduate school. My first semester GPA was a whopping 1.0!
It is a fact that I had to apply for physical therapy school for three years.
It is also a fact that I graduated from PT school with roughly a 3.5 GPA.
The fact is that I did not always do well in school.
The truth is that I was (and am) a student who persevered and overcame obstacles to succeed.
You may be a clinician who had the honor of taking your respective National Boards more than once. And that would be a fact.
Your truth: You are a licensed, practicing therapist who changes people's lives.
