Mindset, Business Growth, Practice Growth

Solve Problems!

We hear it all the time from new practice owners that they want everything to be perfect; have all of their ducks in a row first.

Totally understandable.

However, let me submit to you a perspective on the dangers of Perfect.

Let me paint a picture for you.

Building a business is much like owning a home.  There is always something to address, something that needs fixing or replaced.

A mowed lawn grows back.  Trees need pruning.  Air filters must be changed.

The list goes on and on.  There is always something.

Everything about a home may seem perfect for maybe a week, at most.

In pursuit of having everything perfect for the home, we still give attention to our daily requirements needed to thrive.

We recognize the importance of making sure the things that really matter - our health, finances, etc. - are not forgotten.

We know that if we don’t tend to the necessities bills won’t be paid and the pantry will be bare.

While we tend to the aesthetics of the things we wish, we honor the things needed to thrive.

Healthcare providers establish businesses that offer services which tend to people’s needs; specifically, their health.

Yet, it is not uncommon for new entrepreneurs in the arena to spend excessive energy on the aesthetics.

It is as if they are opening a retail store where the shelves must all be stocked with every size and in every color before the ribbon cutting.

We forget that our potential customers are not looking to have a nice-ity fulfilled.  They are looking for a need to be solved.

It is only natural to want to have all the window dressings for the business. We should have them, and we will.

But, like even a well-tended home, not everything will be, nor can be done at once.

So, don’t wait for Perfect.

Perfect is really the antidote to action; particularly the kind of action that leads to a problem being solved.

And THAT is the business we are in as healthcare providers - solving problems.

Experience over the past seven years worth of conversations has revealed two things about “perfect”.

It stems from fear, and it is an avoidance technique towards doing what we know in our hearts needs to be done.

And this goes right back to fear, which leaves ample room for a whole other discussion.

It was suggested that Perfect has its unintended pit falls.

Waiting for Perfect can lead to doubt.

Eventually, when we don’t see progress in terms of a growing caseload, we start to question if it is all worth it.

Thoughts of “this won’t work” creep into our heads.  We start “hearing” the voices of the naysayers and critics.

Due to the doubt that settles in, we either:

  1. Never create more time to build our dreams

  2. We panic and start throwing money we don’t have at shiny objects we don’t need, which creates a whole other stress level

  3. We start making decisions that take us away from our dream

We become paralyzed.

We aren’t sure what to do, so we do nothing; becoming more fearful and cautious.

Ultimately, we sabotage ourselves with a self fulfilling prophecy.

The reality is that we fall into these sandtraps NOT because we were bad at trying to grow a business.

Instead, we don’t see the movement we want because our energy is not directed towards conversations that lead us closer to solving people’s problems.

Our energy has been on the window dressings - the aesthetics that look good, but they don’t serve the people in the way in which they are looking to be served.

It’s like being in the corporate setting where reviews are based on metrics that don’t correlate directly to patients meeting their goals.

Rather, how effective has one been in charging more units, having patients be seen for more than the prescribed sessions, and so forth?

The fluff that drives revenue, rather than leading to desired and timely outcomes.

Chances are, you can probably relate to the real scenario of meeting the demands of ownership and not of the paying customer.

Finally, waiting for Perfect simply delays success.

The sooner that we start solving people’s problems, the sooner we are able to - have the courage to - go all-in with being UNCAGED.

Perseverating over a name, colors, the look of a business card, means that potential customers are passing by.

They most undoubtedly are not receiving our gifts.

Hear our hearts.  Hear my heart.  Yes, a business most assuredly benefits from all the things.

I simply submit this:

If we are building a practice centered around solving people’s problems, then we must direct some of our energy towards finding one person - that first person - whom we can solve their problem.

The community, the customers, the patients, they are all out there.

And they are waiting for you!
