Know your business' needs and foundations!
A question we often receive is how does one face the challenge of gaining time back once they have started their own practice.
As a solopreneur, it is very easy to get stuck in a complete grind mode.
This can leave us with no time to ourselves.
And this is literally the completely opposite reason as to why we started our business in the first place.
In truth, many clinicians find it hard making the transition from employee to CEO.
Last week's blog edition by Kevin DeGroot gave some wonderful thoughts on the subject.
Here are five points that may help you.
The beginning phase of your business is the toughest grind.
It is the hardest push that you will have to make. Making the decision to take action on making the jump is the hardest and most scary decision/action you will make.
The start is where the most effort is required. It’s easy for us to forget that we are trying to build a thriving practice from nothing.
Just as a flywheel takes a lot of energy and umph to get it moving, so does your practice require an extra kick to get going.
Like that flywheel once it’s humming, you will gain momentum and things will run more smoothly.
Answering the question “who” not “how”.
We tend to feel like we need to know how to do everything. Afterall, it IS our business.
However, solving “how” all the time can exhaust our energy levels and take up a lot of precious time.
Sometimes, a better solution - or question to answer - is “Who can do this?” rather than “How do I do this?”
Even if it requires investing a little money, the reward can be well worth it.
Know your limit and identify potential needs before you hit your “end point”.
Defining what you want your own personal caseload to look like is imperative.
Resist the urge to “make hay while the sun shines” - meaning, if you want to be seeing only 15 visits a week, then don’t try to grind out 35 visits a week for the money.
Yes, we all want to make money, but what are you giving up by seeing the extra visits?
Start looking for that first person to hire when you are at 85-90% of your capacity.
Hire while you still have the TIME to train them.
Identify what help you need NOW.
Discern what role is going to help you the most in the immediate future. It may be an admin assistant.
Hire to:
Give yourself more time - whether to work on the business, or for personal reasons, or both.
Allow yourself to generate passive income.
Understand that hiring is an investment.
Expecting a hire to make us money right away puts us in the mindset that hiring is an expense.
A true investment - in anything - means that the rewards come later.
Allow the hire time to start producing.
Remember why you hired someone: to give you time; to generate passive income or both.
Go back to your why.
The value of identifying our why is that it can be the one thing that gets us through difficult times; especially in the beginning, which requires more energy.
Be selfish to your why, and adhere to boundaries.
This may be a hard pill to swallow, but…when you find yourself with no time, you are probably the one who made your schedule. There’s no one to blame but yourself.
Adhere to boundaries.
So much of our why involves finding and knowing our business identity.
This includes personal development.
Unfortunately, many people tend to avoid this phase of growing a practice.
Truth be told, personal development can be the greatest factor in finding the time that is craved for while shaping a thriving practice.
