Mindset, Business Growth, Practice Growth

Learn Offense and Defense!

If you're a physical therapist, occupational therapist, or other healthcare professional dreaming of starting your own business, you're probably focused on growth.

How do I make more money? How do I scale? How do I grow faster?

These are important questions—and they fall into what I call the offensive side of business building.

But before we go all-in on growth, let’s talk about the equally critical (and often overlooked) defensive side: the strategies that keep you from making costly mistakes early on.

In this post, I’m breaking down the defensive and offensive reasons why having a coach, mentor, or guide is not just helpful—it's essential.

Defensive Coaching: Protecting You From Early Mistakes

Avoid Long-Term Leases That Limit Flexibility

One of the most common pitfalls we see with new practice owners is signing a 3–5 year commercial lease before they’ve earned their first dollar. These leases often:

  • Have more space than you currently need.

  • Come with overhead that bleeds your budget.

  • Lock you in before you know if the location is ideal.

In your first 1–2 years, your growth rate should be the fastest. Overcommitting too early puts a ceiling on your potential before you even start.

A good coach helps you evaluate your real needs, predict future needs, and avoid real estate deals that cripple your growth.

Don’t Buy Equipment That Doesn’t Make You Money

We’ve seen too many clinicians spend $10,000–$20,000 on fancy equipment that doesn’t improve client outcomes or increase revenue. You don’t need the latest tech to start.

The truth is, most clients care more about outcomes than gadgets.

With guidance, you can invest in what actually grows your business—systems, marketing, or people—instead of stuff that just takes up space.

Choose Scalable Tools, Not Just Cheap Ones

It’s tempting to use the cheapest CRM, EMR, or scheduling tool when you start. But these often:

  • Limit automation and efficiency.

  • Create more admin work as you grow.

  • Force you to migrate systems later (which is expensive and time-consuming).

In our coaching programs, we provide a high-functioning CRM to avoid this trap. Start with the right foundation, even if your client list is still small.

Think like the business you want to become—not just the business you are today.

Negotiate Better Deals

Whether you’re renting a space in a gym or hiring a marketing contractor, negotiation is a skill. Unfortunately, many clinicians:

  • Overpay because they don’t know what’s standard.

  • Get locked into contracts they can’t afford.

  • Commit to services they don’t fully understand.

We help our clients think through value, timing, and alignment before they sign anything. One client signed an $8,000 contract with a marketing agency before he had a clear brand—and it did almost nothing for him.

Having a second set of experienced eyes can save you thousands.

Stay Focused and Avoid “Shiny Object Syndrome”

Starting a business is exciting. Everything feels like a good idea. But chasing too many strategies at once usually leads to spinning your wheels.

We’ve seen it time and again: someone commits to a growth plan, then three weeks later they’re off trying something new because it seemed more exciting.

A coach keeps you accountable to what actually matters and helps you stick with a plan long enough to see results.

Offensive Coaching: Accelerating Your Growth

Once you’ve protected yourself from the common pitfalls, it’s time to go on offense.

Clarify Your Ideal Client (Avatar)

You don’t just need to “pick a niche.” You need to know your ideal client deeply:

  • What are their pain points?

  • Where do they spend time?

  • Who influences them?

  • What motivates them?

We help you build a client profile so specific it feels like you’re speaking directly to them. This clarity makes marketing easier, networking more effective, and service delivery more impactful.

Choose the Right Marketing Strategy (and Track It)

Marketing can feel like spinning a top on a table—lots of motion, no direction. Instead, we guide clients to:

  • Choose 2–3 key marketing strategies.

  • Execute them consistently.

  • Track their success using clear metrics.

Whether it’s workshops, social media, physician networking, or email marketing, we help you stop guessing and start measuring.

Package and Price Your Services the Right Way

Underpricing is common in healthcare. So is failing to communicate your value.

Coaching helps you:

  • Build service packages that reflect the transformation you provide.

  • Price based on value, not just time.

  • Confidently articulate your offer in a way that makes clients say “yes.”

Streamline Your Sales Process

You could have great marketing and still struggle to convert leads. We often hear:

“I’m having conversations, but no one’s saying yes.”

That’s a sales problem—and we help you fix it by:

  • Teaching a value-based, professional sales approach.

  • Building a predictable process to guide people to a decision.

  • Giving you confidence to sell without feeling pushy.
