Build it and Own it!
Entrepreneurship is often filled with uncertainties, risks, and countless decisions. While external advice and research are valuable, one of the most important factors for success is the ability to trust yourself.
When you trust yourself, you will notice improvements in each of the following areas:
Confidence in Decision-Making
Resilience in the Face of Challenges
Authenticity and Innovation
Better Leadership
Freedom from Over-Reliance on External Validation
Enhanced Creativity and Problem-Solving
Why People May Struggle To Trust Themselves
There are many reasons that people find it difficult to trust themselves.
First, many people may have past experiences of not being heard, believed or even being taught to question their own experience.
When these negative beliefs are reinforced over time, people rely on external validation or reassurance in order to make decisions rather than trusting their own intuition and research.
Another reason many people find it difficult to trust themselves is a fear of failure.
It’s much easier to allow for mistakes when you never feel fully responsible for the decisions being made. When you make decisions on your own, you have to take ownership of the outcome, and many people fear that their decisions will not be successful.
Additionally, perfectionism bleeds into this area because people hyperfocus on what they think the outcome should be rather than being flexible about how it turns out.
People often compare themselves to others and feel inadequate OR compare down to fuel their confidence, which leaves them stuck on the hamster wheel of needing external validation to feel okay with themselves. This is exhausting and unsustainable.
Finally, a lack of practice or experience may cause people to trust themselves.
My four year old is learning how to read. He gets frustrated at times (a lot of the time) because learning is HARD.
It takes real effort and lots of mistakes to master a new skill. It’s easier for him to look to me to tell him the word rather than work it out on his own.
Can you relate? Owning a business is hard! It’s much easier to rely on other people’s experience or direction rather than working things out on your own before you seek advice.
That’s not to deter you from inviting coaching or mentorship, those things are also important.
But the next time you find yourself needing to make a decision, work it out on your own before you present it to someone else rather than waiting to see what they say.
You will build your confidence and trust in yourself by doing so.
How to Build Self-Trust as an Entrepreneur
Acknowledge past successes: Remind yourself of previous challenges you’ve overcome.
Embrace failure as a learning tool: See setbacks as valuable lessons rather than as indicators of your capability.
Limit negative self-talk: Replace doubts with affirmations and constructive feedback to yourself.
Surround yourself with supportive people: Seek a network that uplifts and encourages your vision.
Take calculated risks: The more you step out of your comfort zone, the more confident you’ll become in your ability to navigate uncertainty.
Limit Comparison to others: Focus on your own growth. No one else has the same set of expertise, experience, responsibilities and personality traits as you. You are doing this your own way, allow others to do it theirs as well.
Trusting yourself as an entrepreneur is not about ignoring advice or being overly confident—it’s about balancing external insights with your own instincts and experiences.
The most successful entrepreneurs are those who believe in themselves, take ownership of their decisions, and stay committed to their vision despite challenges.
When you trust yourself, you unlock your full potential and pave the way for true entrepreneurial success.
