It’s a transition!

Seasons.

They come in various forms.

Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall.

Off-season, Pre-season, THE season, and Postseason.

There are seasons for hunting various game and for fishing.

Of course, everyone’s favorite: Tax Season.

Winning seasons and losing seasons.

Towns have “high seasons”.

Everywhere we look, there is a season.

We often describe our very selves as being “in a season”.

Frequently, being “in a season” can imply that we are “stuck”. However, that is not always the case.

“In a season” simply means it’s where we are right now.

Every type of season there is - from sports, to timing, to taxes - is merely a transitional phase that passes and leads to something else.

A new season.

As business owners, clinicians, students, as people, we go through seasons.

Identifying and describing that given season we are in can help us to determine what is needed both in the moment, and to move forward.

Tempered Resilience by Tod Bolsinger is an excellent book that sheds light on phases that we tend to go through.

Bolsinger compares these phases to working with iron.

For iron to be shaped into what it becomes, it must go through four stages: Heat, Held, Pounded, and Rest.

To summarize, iron must first be exposed to increasingly high temps to allow it to soften - or, to be changed.

The held phase is the most critical. This is where the iron is taken from the heat and moved to the pounding spot.

The timing of this phase is crucial. If held too long, the iron cools down considerably which does not allow for it to be molded. Held not long enough, and you end up with a hot mess.

The iron is sharpened into its new form during the pounding stage.

After the beating, the iron is allowed to rest.

This is where it fully cools, preparing to be used in its new purpose.

Using this example, we can look at the season we might be enduring and determine what we need.

If we feel like things are super hot, then perhaps some needed change, or growth is coming.

Coming out of a hot phase, maybe some reflection is in order.

Are you taking massive action? That could be the pounding.

Finally, give yourself the grace of a rest period. It’s good for the soul.

Today’s simple, short commentary is meant to offer a perspective that might be of value when you find yourself “In a Season”.

Seasons aren’t bad.

All of them are necessary.
