Mindset, Business Growth, Practice Growth

You're not just a clinician anymore!

I hear this all the time in my sessions with clinicians: I still don't feel like a business owner.”

Starting your own practice brings major changes—your schedule shifts, your brain works overtime making decisions, your boundaries are tested, your finances fluctuate. But one of the most overlooked and impactful transitions is the identity shift from clinician to CEO.

Yes, you're still providing excellent care. But you’re no longer an employee. You’re leading something.

What many people experience is a kind of identity lag—your actions have changed, but your internal narrative hasn’t caught up. And while that’s completely normal, staying stuck in your old identity can quietly sabotage your leadership, confidence, and growth.

So how do you begin to shift your mindset? Let’s start by doing some honest reflection.

Journal Activity

1. Where are you now?

  • How do you currently describe your role when someone asks what you do?

  • Do you feel more like a provider or an owner? Why?

2. What feels uncomfortable about being a business owner?

  • What beliefs come up around money, leadership, or visibility?

  • What are you avoiding because of those beliefs?

3. What do you admire in other business owners?

  • Can you name someone whose leadership you respect? What qualities do they embody?

  • What qualities do they embody that you’d like to strengthen in yourself?

4. Imagine you’re already fully owning your business identity.

  • How do you show up?

  • What decisions do you make differently?

  • How do you carry yourself in meetings, with patients, with your team?

Action Item Activity

Choose one small step to take this week:

  • Introduce yourself as a “business owner” or “clinic director”

  • Schedule 1 hour of “CEO time” this week

  • Talk with another business owner about mindset

  • Say no to a task that doesn’t align with your business goals

  • Reflect on your pricing model with confidence, not guilt

Shifting from therapist to CEO doesn’t mean you’re leaving behind your clinical identity. It means you’re expanding it. You're stepping into a version of yourself that leads, decides, builds, and sustains—not just for your patients, but for your future and your mission.

This isn’t about faking confidence—it’s about practicing it until it feels true.

You might not feel like a business owner yet. That’s okay. Start acting like one in small, intentional ways. Your mindset will catch up—and when it does, so will your momentum.
